August 11, 1992 PR-124 CARIBBEAN DIPLOMACY AT LION & FOX

When he heard that the great Dean Fraser was in town, Dr. Richard L. Bernal, the Jamaican ambassador to the U.S., just had to stop by to say hello. Ambassador Bernal, who says he's been a big fan of Fraser's for many years, found him mixing down his new solo album, TAKING CHANCES (RAS 3106) with Dr. Dread and Jim Fox at Lion and Fox Recording in Washington, DC. Mr. Fraser is definitely the "Dean" of Reggae music, having written and performed horn arrangements on hundreds of great albums, including those of the legendary Bob Marley. Interestingly, Fraser's musical roots were in the Jamaican military, which shows in many of his inspiring, majestic horn arrangements. For his solo album, Dean Fraser plays a selection of his favorite tunes from over the years, relying only on his memory for the chord changes, and putting a lot of feeling into the flowing sax solos that weave through the recording. Pictured in Lion and Fox's Control Room "A", from left to right, are: Ambassador Bernal, RAS Records' Dr. Dread, and Dean Fraser.

June 3, 1992 PR-120.DOC

People are working hard to make childbearing safer throughout the world. "Vital Allies: Making Motherhood Safe for the World's Women", is a 30 minute program describing these efforts. Produced by Family Care International and Spark Media of Washington, DC, the video describes the problems of women in the third world related to pregnancy and birthing, and shows the efforts of The Safe Motherhood Initiative, a program working to lower the high rates of maternal mortality by helping to provide much needed health services. Lion and Fox Recording of Washington, DC, is proud to have had a part in the production of this video program. Chief Engineer Rob Buhrman composed and recorded two pieces of music for the show. The producers needed original music because they were looking for an ethnic feel that was also soulful and uplifting. Although only samples and acoustic guitar were used, Buhrman limited the use of samples to acoustic instruments, and avoided quantizing, to allow the human feel of the music to come through.

@ 1992 PR-119.DOC

Washington D.C.'s Quesadas recently completed work on their upcoming release "Wound". Recorded on the 24 track Studer in Lion and Fox's Studio A, with engineers Jim Fox and Abbas Zand behind the board, the album captures the band's natural energy and distinctive feel. Working with a tight budget, all eleven songs were recorded live to tape with another session for vocals and overdubs. The end result is a dynamic project that utilizes the range allowed by a 24 track without sacrificing the spontaneous creative atmosphere vital to it's success. "We couldn't be more pleased with both the end result and the entire process," said bass player Scott. "We were able to get the sound and feel we wanted. We were able to relax, be creative and explore and get that all on tape in a way that combines the advantages of a studio sound without losing the ambiance and chemistry that can only be created in a live situation."

Video tape copies of the show were sent from Hollywood. Selby listened to his original location dialogue and watched on the video monitor while he replaced the designated parts. July 16, 1991 PR-115 LION AND FOX - ON LOCATION FOR 24 YEARS

Lion and Fox Recording in Washington, D.C. was founded in 1967 by Hal Lion as a location recording service, and to this day engineers from L & F can often be found haunting the halls of Congress, The White House, and elsewhere, carrying out the company motto: " We Always Get Our Sound ". Along with the federal government, Washington, D.C. is headquarters to many trade associations, lobbying groups, and political think tanks, and there are a great many congressional hearings, meetings, press conferences, radio programs, and interviews which need to be recorded. While these jobs are often covered by hotel A/V staff or in-house personnel, many organizations have come to rely on Lion and Fox for their large inventory of state-of-the-art equipment, instant response to additional client requirements, and their single-minded dedication to guaranteeing broadcast-quality results (engineers won't be worrying about setting up chairs, Xeroxing programs, or the four other meetings also going on in the building).

One of L&F's longest-running location jobs is for the National Association of Corn Refiners, a trade association which puts out a monthly radio show featuring interviews with senators, congressmen, and administration officials. Engineers from Lion and Fox have been recording these shows for over 2 decades, with Brian Hemler and Derrick Parker currently doing the honors.

June 27, 1991 PR-114 LION AND FOX COVERS ALL THE BASES

Lion and Fox Recording in Washington, D.C. hosts clients representing a wide range of musical styles, and recent weeks have been no exception. Sessions have run the gamut of styles from soca to klezmer and everything in between.

In a traditional vein, Jim Fox has just put the finishing touches on Dramtreeo's newest CD release, entitled "Dramtreeo 3". The album features American, Scottish, and Irish folk, sea shanties, protest, and humorous songs. Vince Quinlan, former member of Irish folk group Celtic Folk, was also in cutting 2 songs for his next solo release.

In the R & B area, ASET records producer Mba has been in working on a new album by Serious Business. The Charlottesville, VA group has been making extensive use of Lion and Fox's MIDI and computer setup.

Reggae superstars Inner Circle (of "Bad Boys" fame) worked with Jim Fox and RAS Records' president Gary Himmelfarb, laying down basic tracks for their upcoming release. Himmelfarb and Fox also mixed a new album for Sister Carol, entitled "Mother Culture" (RAS 3077), and have just completed recording, overdubs, and mixing on Israel Vibration's latest CD, "Forever" (RAS 3080).The album features the same all-star lineup as the group's previous release, and has just been digitally edited and mastered by Brian Hemler for CD, LP (yes, they're still making those) and cassette.

From the rock world, Northern Virginia based garage-rockers The Marauders completed work on their new cassette release with freelance engineer Jamie Mereness at the console. The group raved about Lion and Fox's new "D-Drum" setup, which provides incredible sounds and extremely realistic feel previously unavailable on electronic drums.

June 25, 1991 PR-113 "ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE" WRAPS AT LION AND FOX

Shasta Communications and the Institute for Policy Studies completed a 26-part syndicated radio series at Lion and Fox Recording in Washington, D.C.

The weekly series, called "Another Perspective", was a roundtable discussion featuring a variety of experts, legislators, and commentators conversing on topics and viewpoints not given attention by the news media. Carried on the N.P.R. satellite, the show was picked up by more than 110 stations including all major markets, many of whom ran it immediately after "All Things Considered". The series was also broadcast via short-wave to more than 60 countries around the world.

Lion and Fox senior engineer Leigh Stevens recorded the shows in the recently completed studio "D", with Dorothy Green producing.

June 24, 1991 PR-112 LION AND FOX HITS THE BEACH

Washington, D.C. Production company Beach and Associates came in to Lion and Fox Recording to sweeten the audio on their latest video production. The project was a short promotional film for an aviation company at a private airport near Washington. Producer Katie Gates worked with engineer Leigh Stevens to polish up the dialogue, smooth audio edits, lay in sound effects and ambiences, and construct an effect for the logo animation. Engineer Rob Buhrman scoured L & F's extensive library of original and commercial sound effects to provide the sounds of the small private jets which use the facility.

An interesting feature of the project is that no music was used in the mix. With the fairly rich texture of effects and ambiences, Producer Gates decided that the obligatory music library needle drop would be unnecessary, and indeed the show might grab the viewers' attention better with a more low-key informational style.

The show came in on Betacam, sound elements were built up in sync on Lion and Fox's Studer 24-track using the Cipher Digital Softtouch system, and the mix was laid back to Betacam and 1/2" audio tape using the 64-channel board with computer automation in L & F's control room "A".

February 28, 1991 PR-111 HOT SOUNDS FOR HOT SOURCE GRAPHICS AT LION AND FOX

A new client has joined the Lion and Fox Recording "family" in Washington, D.C. In recent weeks, Michael Vaughan, president of Hot Source Graphics, has brought several projects to L & F for audio production work. Hot Source is a Washington-based firm producing film, video, & print for a variety of clients, specializing in high-quality computer animation. The sessions at Lion and Fox are engineered by Leigh Stevens, directed by freelance sound designer David Bartley, and produced by Vaughan via a two-way phone patch to L & F's control room "D".

A training film for Red Cross emergency medical personnel featured an original score by Bartley and Stevens which musically portrayed the various systems of the human body. A convention video for the Cosmetics, Toiletries, & Fragrances Association also featured Bartley's original music.

Also brought to Lion and Fox for sweetening by Hot Source was a promotional video for the Interamerican Investment Corporation.

February 28, 1991 PR-110 REGGAE ROCKIN' STEADY AT LION AND FOX

Reggae vibrations have been detected in the vicinity of Lion and Fox Recording in Washington, D.C. lately, as RAS Records and others continue to promote reggae music in the States.

Lion and Fox president Jim Fox just finished overdubs, mixing and final touches on Yellowman's new album "Party" (RAS 3073), with Gary Himmelfarb (alias "Doctor Dread") producing.

The good doctor also produced Jamaican star Charley Chaplin in his first studio album for RAS, "Cry Blood" (RAS 3075). Recorded and mixed entirely at L & F by Jim Fox, the album features such diverse influences as Jewish folk music, Blues, and MC Hammer, and comes hot on the heels of Chaplin's two live albums mixed by Fox, both of which were immensely popular in Jamaica.

Mr. "Dread at the Controls" himself, Mikey Dread, is presently working on new material with Jim Fox in Lion and Fox's Studio A. In Fox's words, "Mikey's been working in his own inimitable style- reels of tape flying in every direction- I don't even know what we'll end up with, but it's bound to be great!"

These projects, along with most others produced at Lion and Fox, are digitally mastered and transferred directly to L & F's Sony PCM-1630 CD mastering system.

February 27, 1991 PR-109 LIFE DURING WARTIME AT LION & FOX

The Persian Gulf conflict affected everything in Washington in recent months, and the workload at Lion and Fox Recording was no exception. Beginning with the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in August, work came in to the studio with every possible connection to the war.

The Committee for Peace and Security in the Gulf brought in a group of Americans who had escaped from Kuwait after the Iraqi invasion. In a panel discussion later distributed by satellite, they told riveting stories of narrowly avoiding capture or execution. Leigh Stevens engineered the session.

The American Enterprise Institute sponsored a speech by defense secretary Dick Cheyenne, where engineer Derrick Parker fulfilled the unusual request for a live phone feed to the Pentagon. The speech was part of a day-long conference on defense policy, recorded on location by Lion and Fox. Shasta Communications and The Institute for Policy Studies began producing a weekly radio series called "Another Perspective". October 31, 1990 PR-103 POLITICAL MADNESS AT LION AND FOX !

Lion and Fox Recording in Washington, D.C. was a beehive of political spot activity right up to the closing moments of this year's election campaigns, as a host of political consultants made the studios their second homes.

Groups such as John Franzen Multimedia, Deno Seder Productions, Greer, Margolis, Mitchell & Associates, Squier-Eskew, N.P.C. & Associates and others kept Lion and Fox's four studios humming along near capacity, cutting radio and T.V. spots for their clients nationwide. L& F's location just a few blocks from Capitol Hill, comprehensive services, and large in-house staff are especially attractive to consultants for whom the frantic last-minute deadline in business-as-usual. Essential for meeting those deadlines is Lion Recording Services' in-house duplication team headed by Frank Oswald, running the air dubs and Fed-Exing them to the stations within minutes of the completion of a spot.

August 7, 1990 PR-99 ANTI-DRUGS AT LION AND FOX

LION and FOX Recording in Washington, D.C. recently constructed the audio track for an anti-drug TV spot produced by the University of Maryland's Office of Institutional Advancement.

The Governor's Drug and Alcohol Abuse Commission of Maryland needed a hard-hitting PSA to promote their hotline. Producer Mac Nelson (who says he is not uninfluenced by current music-video styles), came up with the concept of a modern montage effect. By lap-dissolving multiple time-exposures of actors portraying hotline callers, Nelson and director/editor George Callaghan created a sense of the torture and torment of drug and alcohol abuse.

For an equally glossy and hard-hitting soundtrack, Nelson and Callaghan turned to Lion and Fox and engineer Leigh Stevens, who created an audio montage to match the video rough-cut. The actors voices were tightly edited, precisely timed and cross-faded, then filtered to simulate telephone callers. Colgate Salisbury's powerful voice-over was recorded and inserted by L&F engineer Rob Buhrman.

A synthesizer score was added, and the spot was digitally edited at Capitol Video for airplay in the near future.

June 11, 1990 PR-95 CD MASTERING AT LION AND FOX

Lion and Fox Recording in Washington, D.C., has taken delivery of a new Sony PCM 1630 Digital mastering system for its Mastering Studio B. The system, which is the standard mastering format for CD production, includes a PCM 1630 Digital Processor, a DMR 4000 Digital Master Recorder, and a DTA 2000 Tape Analyzer.

The addition of CD mastering is a natural step for Lion and Fox, who have been in the mastering business for over 15 years, making thousands of cassette duplication masters. According to Lion and Fox president Jim Fox, "The mastering engineer is the last person in the recording chain who can catch a problem before it's too late, and this is especially important with CDs, where you can hear everything...but we enjoy being in that position, and take pride in it."

The state-of-the-art DMR 4000 digital master recorder, with its "confidence" playback head, allows Lion and Fox mastering engineers to monitor playback of the digital master as it's being recorded, a great advantage in any type of professional recording.

The wrapping was hardly off of the new equipment when eight projects were lined up for CD mastering from RAS Records, including hot reggae albums from SUGAR MINOT, JUNE LODGE and THE MAD PROFESSOR..

With the continuing popularity of CDs as the ultimate in quality sound for the consumer, Lion and Fox expects their CD mastering business to steadily increase, especially with their attractively low mastering rates. "Local producers can now have their CD masters made locally, giving them an extra measure of control over their projects", says Fox "and with the CD master in hand, producers and record companies are free to shop around for the best CD pressing deals."

Leigh Stevens scored and engineered original music for Tipco Homes cable TV spots. The job included a two minute music bed, for the spot called "Great Beginnings", as well as a ten second logo for repeated use by Tipco. Stevens, a staff engineer at Lion and Fox Recording in Washington, D.C., used a blend of traditional instruments and digitally sampled sounds to give the music a unique texture. "One of the fun things about sampling is creating new musical sounds from those which would normally be considered non-musical" said Stevens. UPI Radio wanted a new sounder for '88. Hal Lion recommended the computer music facility at LION & FOX RECORDING in Wash., D.C. and synthesist/engineer Alex McCullough for the job. UPI

Radio news director Mike Freedman wanted a central theme plus variations for different categories. Using a MIDI based computer sequencer driving an Emulator II, DX7, DX21, Oberheim & Korg synthesizers, Mr. McCullough performed and then edited the performance of the several versions.

"It was a very flexible set-up", said Alex. "Performance editing with the sequencer allowed us to transpose, audition sounds, change timing or shift entire tracks laterally, all beforethey were committed to the 24 track tape. I was able to demonstrate a lot of alternatives very quickly."
